September 2011

WOW I can't believe it's Spring! It only seems like yesterday we were healing in our bare rooted trees and roses in the cold of Winter. Now bare root season has finished and we are all excited by the fabulous new season Spring stock. There has been lots of new goodies arriving both out in the nursery and in the shop. It is always great to see the Spring Season Herbs, Vegetables and Flower Seedlings arrive. One of the favourite vege patch plantings for this time of year is tomatoes. If planting now ensure you protect them from frost as it's not uncommon to still get frosts into October. Frost cloth is a quick and easy option.

Spring Catalogue

Garden Club Early Bird Start

Our Spring Catalogue has some great offers across all departments. It is jam packed with colour to ensure we know that Spring has truly arrived! As well as some fantastic tomatoe, vege and flower seedlings from $2.98 there are plenty of flowering garden shrubs to get your garden blooming, funky garden art to add some fun, pots to add that homely touch, lighting to soften and highlight, fertiliser and mulch to keep our garden's growing, garden tools and hardware to make gardening easier and outdoor furniture for us to "sit and enjoy"! So yes.... it has something for everyone.

Along with Spring Catalogue there are plenty of other things to tempt you at the nursery this month with some great new giftware from Danielle's trip to the Melbourne Gift Fair brightenng up the shop. There are also some great benches and patio table and chair settings for that verandah or garden nook. It seems crazy to be talking christmas but it will be here before we know it, so get in early if you spot something for yourself or someone else, and of course lay-bye is available.

New season pots have also arrived and again there are some lovely pots and great buys in the Pot Sale promotion.

As well as plenty to do at the Nursery many of the team have also been busy in our customer's gardens. There has been plenty of pruning and garden tidying over winter along with garden design and consultation. Now that Spring is here many are taking advantage of the weather to commence home garden projects and again we are busy with design and consultation, planting and general maintenance. Feel free to call and discuss any projects you have on the go or are in process of planning. We are always happy to help with design or implementation of that new garden area.

The boys have been unpacking lots of great new pots in the last couple of weeks. They look fantastic & there are lots of great specials with some glazed pots reduced by 30%!  !11 !111111111

Plant of the Month

Daphne 'Eternal Fragrance'

This is a truly new and unique breed of Daphne ..   .

Eternal Fragrance offers an extended flowering period with the main flush in Spring and continuous spot flowering throughout the year, particularly in the warmer months. Along with the white flowers comes an exquisite fragrance. The perfume is a delightful scent and almost continuous with flower production being in Spring with more flushes right through to Autumn.

Daphne Eternal Fragrance has a compact growth habit with the flowers forming tight clusters at the tips of the evergreen foliage.

Eternal Fragrance also offers other advantages in being frost hardy, and both heat and dry tolerant .

Top Jobs for September

General Garden Care:

  • Fertiliser your entire garden. Dynamic lifter is an excellent general fertiliser for just about everything in your garden. However use a specific fertiliser for natives (Garden Gold for Natives or Naturally Natives)
  • Top dress and fertilise your lawn
  • Lightly trim Natives after flowering to keep them bushy
  • Reapply mulch to garden beds
  • With the really heavy frost finished anything frost damaged plants can be trimmed
  • Lightly trim hedges and shrubs to encourage Spring growth
  • Your entire garden would benefit from an application of Seasol which is like a health tonic for your plants, to make the most of the warmer weather. The easiest way to apply it is with a 2ltr Ready To Use pack which just clicks on the end of your hose
  • Now is a good time to check your irrigation systems to make sure they are all working properly and move any sprays as plants have grown

The Vege Patch:

  • Add some Moo Poo or Gro-Ganic to your vege patch to improve the soil quality
  • Get ready to enjoy some great fresh Spring and Summer meals and salads with:

Tomatoes, Beans, Beetroot, Capsicum, Chilli, Cellery, Corn, Cucumber, Lettuce, Onions, Sugar Snap & Snow Peas, and plenty more.

  •  Add some flavour with your favourite herbs such as Rosemary, Basil, Dill, Corriander, Parsley and Mint
  • Keep a close watch on your vege patch and try and remove any obvious pests by hand eg: Cateripillars. Try and keep chemical use on vegetable and fruit crops to a minimum. Eco-Oil is a safe organic pruduct that may be used at this time of year. Alternatively come in and discuss concerns and treatment options with our team.
