Plant of the Month

Helleborus 'Ivory Prince'

A perfect way to add colour to your garden. This special plant puts on a fantastic flower display. Bringing colour into a Winter garden is easy with the Hellebore Ivory Prince. This plant is a top performer! Ivory Prince is a compact bushy Hellebore growing to about 45cm high by 45cm wide. It has dark green leathery foliage which is covered by masses of flowers and the colour contrast between the flowers and foliage looks amazing. They look brilliant in pots but also perform well under the shade of trees. They are a great option for shady areas and can also tolerate a good amount of sun. Hellebores are a classic garden favourite that reminds us that Spring is just around the corner. They are quite dry tolerant once established and require little to no pruning.

Top Jobs for August

Rose Pruning: Late July and early August is rose pruning time. Roses need good air circulation to limit fungal disease, so to achieve this they need to be pruned into an open vase shape. Start by removing any dead or damaged limbs and any limbs that are growing inside the vase shape. Then prune the remaining branches back by about 60% and always to an outward facing bud.so the new growth goes out. Always prune at a 45 degree angle and make sure the angle is sloping away from the bud. Clean up all the cuttings and rose leaves from the ground as they can harbour disease. Spray the rose and the surrounding garden bed with lime sulphur to help control black spot. Finally fertilise your roses with Plants Plus rose food or Sudden Impact for roses and they will be set for Spring.

General Garden Care:

  • Now is a good time to prune deciduous trees. Cut off any low or damaged branches.
  • Don't prune Spring flowering trees yet as you will miss out on their flower display. Wait till they have finished flowering.
  • Spray peaches and nectarines with leaf curl fungicide just at bud swell to avoid leaf curl later in the season.
  • When Camellia's have finished flowering, give them a prune to keep them compact, then fertilise with Plants Plus Camellia food.
  • Don't prune any plants that have been damaged by frost yet as this burnt foliage is protecting the rest of the plant. Wait till September and warmer weather to remove the burnt foliage.
  • Check Citrus for Bronze Orange bug which can be found under the leaves. They cause the wilting of young shoots and flowers stalks which generally turn black and shrivel. Spray with Confidor to control. Also check for Citrus leaf miner the main symptoms are silvery trails on the leaf surface and curling and distortion of mainly the soft new growth. Control with Pest Oil.
  • Your entire garden would benefit from an application of Seasol which is like a health tonic for your plants, to make the most of the warmer weather. The easiest way to apply it is with a 2ltr Ready To Use pack which just clicks on the end of your hose
