As the weather warms up new growth reminds us what a fantastic gardening season spring can be. There are some things we can do to make the most of what nature has to offer our garden. These include: Pruning deciduous trees and roses Deciduous trees and roses health and performance is enhanced by annual pruning. Always use a clean sharp pruning tool (secateurs, loppers or pruning saw) to make a clean angled cut. Commence by removing any old or diseased wood and then prune according to your desired shape. Where possible cut each branch back to an outward growing bud or shoot. When pruning bush and standard roses it is generally accepted to prune towards a "vase like" shape by removing inward growing branches. Tree pruning is generally not so generic as factors that influence your pruning include your tree variety, desired canopy height and external environmental factors (e.g proximity to buildings, power lines etc). It is recommended that deciduous fruit trees and roses be sprayed with Lime Sulphur at the time of pruning. Fertilising The vast majority of plants and gardens benefit from application of fertiliser at this time of year.
